Does the name John F. Bassett ring a bell? In the late 1970's I met him several times and we had some really fun chats - I distinctly recall he treated me like a peer and was interested in what I had to say, which was very little. John F was the father of a friend of mine, and he died of a brain tumour in 1986 at just 47 years of age. But what a glorious 47 years. He owned the WHA's Toronto Toros which then became the Birmingham Bulls (and made headlines everywhere with his Baby Bulls). He owned the Memphis Southmen of the World Football League and made headlines for signing Dolphins stars Larry Csonka, Jim Kiick and Paul Warfield). He then owned the Tampa Bay Bandits of the USFL and clashed with fellow owner Donald Trump (see here for the story and now famous letter he sent to DJT). He was also a movie producer (Faceoff - the 1971 movie, not the 1997 Nick Cage Face Off). And his daughter Carling Bassett was a Canadian tennis superstar who ranked as high as 8th in the world. I’d like to carry on but it's trivia time.
